Expository Preaching (A definition of expository preaching) (01)

A DEFINITION OF EXPOSITORY PREACHING

The definition proposed "expository preaching is the opening up of the inspired text with such faithfulness and sensivity that the voice of God is heard, and the rule of Christ is established in the heart and lives of God's people." The expository preaching must be involved in the text of the Word of God, and to the context of the ministry field for God's people in which they live through the world.

And if it is so, what is the implication of this definition? The definition could be explained to the convictions about the Biblical text. And the text of the Scriptures has been inspired in the Holy Spirit, the 3rd person of Triune God, namely God. The Bible says, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness"(2 Thim. 3:16).

It is, therefore, an inspired text. In other words the biblical exposition is the opening up of the inspired text. Because it is not the word of man but the Word of God for the purpose of saving His people. And it is, to some degree, a closed text. In other words, the biblical exposition is the opening up of the inspired text. There is a difference between the closed text(inspired text) and the opening text(exposition).

The closed text is, in a sense the written words of God, but the opening text is an explanations of the written words of God. In this condition, preachers must say what the Scriptures is so perfectly completed to say and to edit it because the Bible says itself, "Look in the scroll of the LORD and read: None of these will be missing, not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth that has given the order, and his Spirit will gather them together"(Isa 34:16).
