Expository Preaching (A definition of expository preaching) (05)

Preaching must call for an obedient response: "the rule of Christ is established." In a sense, preaching is a call for the response of the listeners. Just as the passage of the Scripture, James: "Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death(1:15)," so then after the words of God has conceived, it gives birth to faith; and faith, when it is full-grown, gives birth to the salvation of life.

Paul says, "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent?"(Rom. 10:14-17).

As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" What is the Good News?"(Isa. 52:7). It is the Gospel, the Word of God through which it conceives the faith to the salvation of the listeners. Preacher should preach the very Word of God exactly by the exposition of the text appropriate to the context of the listeners.

The Bible says the feet of preaching the Gospel, the Good News is beautiful. "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!"(Isa 52:7). Cotton Mather said, "The great design and intention of the office of a Christian preacher [is] to restore the throne and dominion of God in the soul of man."(Student and Preacher, or Directions for a Candidate of the Ministry, 1726).
