Expository Preaching (A definition of expository preaching) (03)
It is a sufficient Word. Isaiah said about the Bible(Holy Scriptures) as follows: "Look in the scroll of the LORD and read: None of these will be missing, not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth that has given the order, and his Spirit will gather them together"(Isa 34:16). It means to be perfect all in all. Because it is God's mouse that has given the order, and his Spirit will gather them together, it is a sufficient Word, even its writers are humanbeings. It is the Word of God perfectly inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Obligations in expounding Scripture of the preachers are faithfulness to the inspired text, sensitivity to the needs of the listeners, and call for an obedient response. First of all, the preacher should be faithful to the inspired text given for his sermon. And It is the most important for the preacher making up his sermon of the Bible. God's Word is absolute even in any situation, yesterday, today and tomorrow.
We are, therefore bound to the message of the text. Donald Coggan said, "The Christian preacher has a boundary set for him. When he entered the pulpit, he is not an entirely free man. There is a very real sense in which it may be said of him that the Almighty has set him bounds that he shall not pass. He is not at liberty to invent or choose his message: it has been committed to him, and it is for him to declare, expound and commend it to his hearers.....It is a great thing to come under the magnificent tyranny of the Gospel"(Stewards of Grace, 1958).
