Augustine (Thought-Criticism) (01).

V. CHARACTERIZATION AND CRITIQUE
(by Karl Jaspers)

(1) The Personality in Its First General Aspect

(1) This always active mind, driven by impetuous passion, encompassing all the knowledge of his time, perpetually elucidates itself and communicates its self-exploration in a striving for perfect openness.

(2) Yet in the end we are left questioning. His nature seems to disclose noble and commonplace traits.

*(3) His thinking moves in the most sublime speculations and in rationalistic platitudes (plain); it is sustained by lofty Biblical ideas of God and succumbs not infrequently to superstition.

(4) The great questions he treats are forces in his own life.

(5) He seems bold and venturesome and yet remains anchored, almost without danger, in his unfailing fundamental certainty.

*(6) His thinking moves in vast contradictions.

1) It is always related to his actual experience and at the same time to the One on which everything depends;

2) it is addressed to the adversaries that happen to come along, and attuned to practical tasks.
