How to Begin the Small Group
Generally speaking, everyone needs some kind of a group because every person has a disposition of a sense of belonging in itself (Becker 1993a, 66). First of all, pastors (leaders) must clarify the group's purpose through their vision. If the purpose is not clear, the group has no the reason for being, raison d'etre. A group should, therefore, have a clear-cut purpose through the vision (Galloway 1993, 33). Secondly, Potential group members should be invited (Becker 1993a, 68).
In other words, pastors should call the potential group members for the purpose of succeeding in their small group ministry (Becker 1993a, 68). Thirdly, the first meeting must be successful in its operation because the first impression must usually have an important influence on the group's progress for the next meetings to come. Palmer Becker commented on this matter as follows:
At the first meeting, members need to get accquainted with each other. As each person arrives, make sure they know everyone else present. Help the member get to know each other by having each share something about themselves. Start with names, history-giving, hometown, and occupations. Unusual and unimportant questions like, "What did you have for break-fast?" help everyone stay relaxed (Becker 1993a, 70).
It is more important to encourage the group members so as to have a sense of being and mission to their group in the church. And the small group begins when someone brings together several--maybe three to twelve persons--with which the group needs in accordance (Becker 1993a, 66). Of course, the candidates of the group membership should be chosen by a qualification.
