(2) Irenaeus of Lyons
1) He was a Greek, born in Asia Minor into a Christian family.
2) He listen to Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna (Apostolic Father).
3) He became a presbyter, and then succeeded to the martyred bishop (177).
4) He was influenced by Justine.
5) He is a bridge between early Greek theology and Western Latin theology.
6) He was against the heretics, while exposited the apostolic Christianity.
7) He employed a number of arguments against Gnosticism:
¨ç He described the different Gnosticism in detail.
¨è He challenged the Gnostic claim to secret apostolic tradition.
¨é He was one of the first to talk of New Testament Scripture alongside the Old Testament (He understood the N.T. with the O.T.)
8) His famous book, 'Against the Heretics:
¨ç Historical survey to the Gnostic heretics.
¨è Philosophical refutation against the heresy.
¨é Biblical criticism positively on the heresy.
¨ê Criticism on the though of Marcion by the Word of God
¨ë The theory of Resurrection of Christ against Gnosticism.
