Same-sex marriage is legal in the U.S. but not in South Korea¡¦ yet. Prominent Korean politicians are starting to make it their political platform.

The idea of men having sex with men and women with women is disturbing to many people. Then why do so many people, including Christians, support it? They see the LGBTQ community as a persecuted minority, like blacks or women in times past. Advocates of same-sex marriage consider it a civil rights issue, not a moral issue. Many Christians agree, sometimes comparing those who oppose it to those who used Biblical grounds to support slavery or object to the women¡¯s rights movement.

I¡¯d like to recommend a book that helps to clarify this issue biblically - \"Slaves, Women, and Homosexuals\", authored by William J. Webb. The author¡¯s hermeneutic principles are sound, and his conclusion is convincing. In this book the author introduces the concept of the ¡°redemptive movement¡± on social issues.

God knew that people, with their fallibilities, would not be able to meet His standards, so many of His commandments in the Old or New Testaments, were less than ideal. For example, God¡¯s will for a husband and wife is that they become one body, inseparable. But in the OT, a divorce was allowed when accompanied by a proper divorce certificate because otherwise, women would suffer greatly with no chance to remarry (Mat 19:3~9).

In Scripture, we can see progress on social issues from Near Eastern culture to the OT and then to the NT. The author calls this redemptive progress.

This redemptive progress is evident in regards to the issue of slavery. Slaves were considered property in ancient times in the Near East. In the OT they started to be treated as human beings (Ex 21:26-27). There is progression. Then in the NT we see further progress from the OT as Christian slaves were accepted as brothers (Philemon 1:16). We can conclude, then, that the slavery system was temporary, and God¡¯s ultimate goal is a community without slaves.

We see a similar progress in women¡¯s issues. In ancient times in the Near East, women belonged to men, much like livestock. But there was a progress in the OT: Israelites were commanded to treat wives and female slaves as people (Deu 24:1-3). In the NT we see more progress as women were accepted as equal in Christ (1 Cor 7:3). From this progress we can conclude that men and women are equal before God.

However we don¡¯t see such a redemptive progress when it comes to homosexuality. Ancient cultures, including the Greeks and Romans, were lenient to homosexuality, even lauded it. But the OT condemns homosexuality as a grave sin (Lev 18:21-23). The New Testament is no less harsh, prohibiting it strongly (1 Cor 6:9-10). We don¡¯t see redemptive progress here. So we should conclude that homosexual acts are a universal sin, regardless of time and culture.

Obviously, some people are born with homosexual tendencies. These tendencies themselves are not sin; it becomes sin only when acting on them. Asserting homosexuality as sin is not for the purpose of condemning homosexuals, but rather redeeming them. They can¡¯t become children of God unless they repent. They can¡¯t repent unless they acknowledge their homosexual lifestyle as sin.

We, as Christians, should recognize that it is not our place to judge or condemn those who are outside our faith. God is the ultimate judge of all of our salvation. The Bible tells us to be a light unto the world, and Jesus showed us the example of seeking out and loving sinners. How can people repent and come to Jesus if no one introduces them to Jesus? It is love that will convict, not condemnation. So let us not be avoidant or afraid of building relationships with homosexuals, but pray for them and look for ways to show them God¡¯s love.
