The Coronavirus epidemic is ebbing in Korea. Due to widespread testing and case tracing, the Korean government is able to better contain contagion and limit contamination than in America and other affected countries. In fact, many aspects of society have been relatively normal in Korea. Restaurants and even theaters have been open although the number of customers is dismal.
These days Korean pastors are agonizing over the decision whether to hold Sunday worship service in their sanctuaries or at members¡¯ homes via media. Some pastors have made the choice to hold worship services in their sanctuaries, despite the local government threatening to shut down their church buildings. These threats loom over the churches, even when they agree to wear masks, have their temperatures checked before entering, wipe down any surfaces they touch, and sit 2 meters apart.
I personally understand these pastors¡¯ determination because community is an essential part of the Christian faith. God Himself is a triune God - a community. The church strives to make a community resembling our triune God, bound by love. Baptism is a rite to proclaim that the recipient has become a member of the faith community, which is the body of Christ.
Should pastors insist on corporate worship or give it up? I think there is a third option, where small groups of church members meet at a member¡¯s home to worship. Their pastor leads worship online, or they follow the guidelines provided by their church. This would be a happy compromise between having corporate worship service and social distancing to reduce the possibility of the virus spreading. (In the worst case scenario, if a member is found to have the virus, it would be much easier to trace the people who may have been exposed.)
This is not an option in the US because the Coronavirus epidemic is just starting. For now, rigorous physical distancing is necessary to prevent the public health system from being overwhelmed. Christians should model socially responsible behavior and follow the guidelines administered by their local governments. Fellowship and community does not have to cease due to physical separation, and we should continue to reach out to our house church members, friends and family regularly.
Larry Brilliant is a renowned epidemiologist who warned of a pandemic back in 2006. He said three things must happen for people¡¯s life to return to normal: (1) Everyone in the US must be able to be tested readily and quickly, free of charge. (2) Vaccines are available. (3) Health providers become immune to the virus by catching and then recovering from it. Obviously these are not likely to happen any time soon.
Corporate worship is a vital part of the Christian faith. Whatever that looks like, whether it is meeting in small groups in Korea or meeting online in America, we should continue worshiping together every Sunday in spirit and truth.
