Expository Preaching (How to Apply the Sermon to the Listeners) (02)

And, there must be Scriptural proof of the import- ance of application in the Bible. The application is according to the nature of the Bible. The Bible is the Word of God. God always says his will with the truth to the people in the world. His Word brings the change of the people to the will of God. The Word of God demands the people's to change their mind and the lives. The words used to describe apostolic preaching, and the recorded sermons of prophets, apostles and our God.

In fact, there are so many clear statements of Scriptures: "(For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope" (Rom.15:4), "The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith"(Thim.1:5), and "But everyone who prophesies speaks to man for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort"(1Cor. 14:3). Of course, there is an objection to application: "It is the work of the Holy Spirit to apply the Word."

Preacher could refer to the suggestions for improving application in preaching. He may discover the need which prompted the writing of the passage, and make the Spirit's purpose in giving the passage, the purples of the sermon. He has to deal with both the meaning and purpose.

The meaning has to go with content, namely "What does this passage mean?, What does it convey?" Purpose has to do with intent, namely "What did the Spirit intend for this passage to do in the lives of its readers?" Sometimes it is plainly stated just as in I Thessaloniams 4:18: "Therefore encourage each other with these words." Sometimes it can be discovered from the context, for examples, Philippians 2 and Luke 15(15:1-3).
