Expository Preaching (Step Four: Organizing the Sermon)

Preacher should relate the homiletical idea to the main divisions of the outline. What natural question does the homiletical idea raise in the mind? For example, let us take the text I Thessalonians 2:1-12, "You know, brothers ...You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.

For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory." In these passages, what is the homiletical idea? It is that the servant of God should have an exemplary pattern for his ministry. And what is that pattern? or What are the characteristics of that pattern? The very answers to these questions must be written in the passage.

Preacher should formulate a transitional sentence. And this sentence answers the question asked of the homiletical idea, and should contain a key word which will link together all the main divisions. In the preceding illustration the key word is "characteristics." Each division of the outline would then be one of the characteristics of that exemplary pattern. There is the characteristic of holy boldness(I thess. 2:1-2), of faithfulness to God(2:3-6), of gracious condescension(2:7-9), and of integrity(2:10-12).

Preacher should determine the main divisions of the outline. And each division should be a sentence. Each sentence should be succinct and distinct. The sentences should be grammatically parallel to each other, and use the same key word. If possible, the sentences should be expresses in a contemporary manner. And above all, each sentence must be faithful to the text. Every point should be obvious in the text. Preacher should indicate in parentheses following each division the verse reference from which that point is taken. All main division must support the homiletical idea.
