Four Views on Salvation in a Pluralistic World (15)
Paul Jang  2008-12-03 14:49:40, hit : 3,317

(2) But individual faith in Jesus Christ removes one's guilt and satisfies God's wrath (3:21-31; 5:1-11; 6:23).

(3) To be saved, a specific confession has to be made, and a specific set of truths must be believed (19:9-10).

(4) Therefore hearing the gospel is a natural prerequisite for the satisfaction of this condition. Of course Jews and Gentiles alike need to hear about and believe in Jesus (10:14).

(5) But inasmuch as many are unable to "call on the name of the Lord" (10:3) - who is here identified as Jesus (10:9) - because they have not heard about Jesus, an evangelist must be sent. Only then may the unevangelized hear, believe the gospel, call on the name of the Lord, and so be saved (10:13-15).

(6) No alternative means of salvation for the unevangelized is alluded to. If there were another alternative that offered the wide hope of the inclusivist, Paul's argument might seem misleading, if not deceptive.

¨ê John 14:6; 17:20:

"Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message"

(1) The first verse is Jesus' answer to the question of Thomas, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

(2) Jesus replies: " I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (14:5-6).

(*) The following words must be significant:

(1) "I am" (not merely to know but who is to be)

(2) "Jesus" is the way and the truth and the life.

(3) "No one" (¥ïὐ¥ä¥åῖς) come to the Father except this way.

(4) "My prayer is not for them alone" (universality).

1) "I am not praying for the world" (17:9).

2) However he is paying for those "who will believe in me through their message." (17:20).
