Hermeneutics (Revelation Interpretation: Methods)

[3] The Interpretation Methods of the Revelation

(Dr. Lee) (¿äÇÑ°è½Ã·ÏÀÇ Çؼ®¹æ¹ý)

The interpretation of the Revelation has been divided into several methods according to the theologians. There is a wide difference between the conservatism and the liberalism. (½ÅÇÐÀڵ鿡 µû¶ó ¿©·¯ °¡Áö ¹æ¹ý)

The one has the thorough position of historical and grammatical interpretation while the other has the position of existential and literary interpretation like the formgeschichtliche and redactions.

(1) The Literary-Critical Method (¹®ÇÐÀû ºñÆò¹æ¹ý)

This is a method of researching the origin of the words of God in human dimension disregarding its divine dimension.

It regards the Scriptures as the edited documents, and categorizes the documents by the comparative religion, etymology, and formgeschichte. (Grotius, Gunkel, Bultmann, Dibelius, Schmidt).

(2) The Psychological Method (½É¸®ÇÐÀû Çؼ®¹æ¹ý)

This method regards the words of God (the revelations) as the psychological phenomena. It disregards the objective revelation of the words of God. It is subjectivism.

(3) The Spiritual or Idealist Method (¿µÀû, °ü³äÀû Çؼ®¹æ¹ý)

It has had the origin from the Allegorical interpretation of the ancient Alexandrian school. It has objected the literal interpretation of the words of the Bible.

It regards the words of God as the principle of the whole human history not the prophetical feature of the words of God.

It has insisted that the Sacred history is only that of the fights between God and Satan. (Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Augustine, Hofmann, Ebrard, Milligan).

(4) The Preterist Method (°ú°ÅÀû Çؼ®¹æ¹ý)

This method regards the history of sacred revelation as the only past history disregarding the prophetical meaning.

For example, it has regarded the historical persecutions which had happened by the Roman emperors in the first century as the only past facts.

As the result of this interpretation, it has denied the eschatological parusia of Christ. (Alcazar, Grotius, Bossuet, Wetstein, Stuart, Ewald, De Wette, Beckwith).

(5) The Historical/Continuous-historical Method (¿ª»çÀû Çؼ®¹ý)

It regards the revelations of the Scriptures as the epitome of the whole history from the ages of John to the last days of the world. (Joachim, Anselm, Luther, Wycliffe, Mede, Elliot, Bengel, Hengestenberg, Sir Isaac Newton, Faber, Bullingr).

(6) The Futurist Method (¹Ì·¡Àû Çؼ®¹æ¹ý)

It focuses on the prophetic messages, which has been alluded about the future in the Scriptures. for example "what will take place later" (Rev. 1:19). (Justin Martyre, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Ribera, Zahn, Maitland, Todd, Chafer, Thiessen, Harrison, Walvoord).
