The Church of Fathers: Apostolic Fathers (Origen)
Paul Jang  2008-12-03 14:33:39, hit : 3,544

(4) Origen

1) He was, a Father or Heretics, called by theologians.
2) He was born around 185 the year of Christian parents in Alexandria.
3) He devoted himself totally to a life of austerity and scholarship.
4) He was loyal to the Catholic Church through out his life.
5) He was appointed bishop of Alexandria by Demetrius.
6) He moved to Caesarea in Palestine, where he continued his work.
7) He was imprisoned in the Decian persecution (249-51).
8) He died a few years later as a result of his injuries.
9) Origen was a prolific writer, but much of his work has been lost.
10) His major writings may be divided into four groups:

¨ç Biblical works: Massive edition of the OT (Hebrew and Greek), Commentaries, homiles and scholia.

¨è First Principles: the first attempt in the early Church to produce a systematic theology(God, the world, freedom and the Scripture)

¨é Against Cesus: Origen's reply to Celsus' True Word, a vehemently anti-Christian work written in the late 170s.

¨ê Practical works: Prayer and Exhortation to Martyrdom.

11) His theology was thoroughly familiar with "Greek philosophy" because he studied under leading pagan philosophers, Ammonius, Saccas, founder of Neo-Platonism, but this is doubtful.

12) But his aim was nothing other than to be a loyal orthodox Christian. His writings were devoted to the explanation of the Bible. Nevertheless those have had some problems because of his allegorical interpretation.

13) He set out the apostolic tradition which he took as the test of orthodox.
14) He had a tension between orthodoxy and heresy, especially Trinity.
15) He has been misunderstand a heretic and Platonistic.

¨ç His fervent desire to be orthodox and his belief to devote to Jesus.
¨è His actual theology was totally permeated by Platonism.
