2. Dionysius the Areopagite (Pseudo-Dionysius)

(1) Dionysius the Areopage has been exactly unknown who he was.

(2) Originally in the New Testament, Dionysius the Areopagite was one of Paul's converter at Athens (Acts 17:34).

(3) From the sixth century, a number of major writings circulated under his name. (Divine Names, Mystical Theology, Heavenly Hierarchy, Ecclesiastical Hierarchy and so on).

(4) But the mysterious person who wrote under the name Dionysius the Areopagite is one of the most intriguing figures in Christian history.

(5) Therefore he had been called Pseudo-Dionysius.

(6) Perhaps, he was a symbolic figure as if Plato, Aristotle, and Seneca were, and Christian did the same thing: Pseudo-Tertullian, Pseudo-Augustine and so on.

(7) Pseudo-Dionysius is a Neo-platonist philosopher who also happens to be a Christian (Some have thought that he taught Neo-Platonism with a thin Christian veneer, others that successfully taught Christian truth in a Neo-Platonist setting, and yet others that his teaching is an unsuccessful juxtaposition of Christian and Neo-Platonist elements).

(8) His Theological thoughts:

1) God is transcendence and unity (entering into union with Him)
2) He is beyond anything (existence, essence, personality)
3) He is beyond the Universal cause of existence while Itself not existing.

(9) Pseudo-Dionysius made two major contributions to Christian thought.

1) Hierarchy (God and the world): Ecclesiastical levels as heavenly world.
2) Via negativa (the negative way): theological negative or aposphatic way.

(10) Maximus the Confessor wrote commentaries on Dionysius's works, doctoring his orthodoxy and ensuring his influence in the East.
