The Council of Constantinople (Cyril of Alexandria)

ÀåºÎ¿µ 2008-11-08 06:26:33, Á¶È¸ : 160

(7) Cyril of Alexandria

1) He became a bishop of Alexandria in 412, in succession to his uncle Theophilus.

2) His main claim to fame lies in his controversy with Nestorius bishop of Constantinople.

3) Cyril's uncle Theophilus had secured the exile of John Chrysostom, and he was to follow suit with Nestorius.

4) After his death, Cyril own successor, Dioscorus, was to follow in this tradition, though with less success.

5) He opposed Nestorius because of fundamental differences concerning the person of Jesus Christ. [Nestorius belonging to Antiochene school followed the 'Word-man' approach- he saw Christ as Jesus the man in-dwelt by God the Word. (the unity in purpose and will between Jesus the man and God the Word / a 'pamtomime horse' theory of the incarnation. Nestorius denied that the virgin Mary was theotokos/God bearer/Mother of God)].

6) Cyril required Nestorius to sign twelve 'anathema' but Nestorius refused and the emperor called the Council of Ephesus at which he was deposed.

7) Cyril's position is that Jesus Christ is not a man in-dwelt by or conjoined to God the Word-he is God the Word, made flesh.

8) He also used a formula which he believes to come from Athanasius but which in fact originated with Apollinaris. (two natures of Christ)
