THE FACTORS OF BARRIER TO THE CHURCH GROWTH IN JAPAN

Unfortunately Japanese Church has not grownup; until! now in Spite of
her earlier mission by the Christian missionaries accompanied with
some Portuguese commerce in the sixteen century. It is supposed that
first reaching of Christian missionaries were first knocking at the
door of the Land of Japan.

It was apparently in 1542(the date is somewhat uncertain) that the Portuguese first landed in Japan. Less than a decade later, in 1549, active Christian missionary effort was begun
there. Fittingly, the leader of the initial band of missionaries was
the pioneer Jesuit in the Far East, Francis Xavier. Of course Protes-
tant Church contact with Japan in a long time after then. It may be
1837AD. Nevertheless what is the reson why she has not grown up? What
are the factors of the barrier to the church growth in Japan?

1. IDEOLOGICAL ASPECTS

1) Nationalism

In a sense Japanese might have been characterized by an ultrana-
tionalist, especially extreme patriotist. Because they had sometimes
carried out so called a natonal isolaton policy(to close a country)
for the purpose of preventing them from any foreign intervention,
Christianity which was supported from the foreign missions could not
help stopping to grow. Therefore the churches in Japan had been depr-
essed rather than helped the extension.


2) Militarism

Upon the Manchurian incident outbreak, the party politics in Japan
had been thoroughly controlled by the military authorities and shorn
of their freedom of learning and thought under the militarism. Under
this situation Christianity had been in trouble.


2. POLITICAL ASPECTS

1) Diplomatic Relationship
When Japan once opened her doors she adopted Western culture more
quickly than did China, and she was feverishly acquiring much of Occ-
