THE FACTORS OF BARRIERS TO THE CHURCH GROWTH IN JAPAN (04)

1) Shinto as national Religion.

There are two kinds of Shinto namely, National Shinto and Religious
Shinto its converts of which had been 20.000.000 members. But in fact
it had to include all the people in Japan, and they were under an ob-
ligation to attend worship for the Japanese King in the Shinto shrine.
Since a Peace Treaty has been concluded in 1533, Japanese people as
well as the government officials has attended worship for the Shinto
showing signs of the national revival. Hideyoshi became hostile aga-
inst Christianity because of the native Shinto. He had not only stop-
ped the proclamation of Christianity but also persecuted the Christi-
an. There Chistianity in Japan has been depressed.

2) Buddhism in Japan

Since Buddhism has been introduced into Japan from China passing th-
rough Korea in 552 AD, it has continuously expanded with around
76,000,000 members.Buddhism is an idol worship.Therefore missionaries
were intorerant of Buddhism. Because of Buddhist power expanded thro-
ugh Japan, missionaries had difficulties in their minstry. Especially
Buddhism under the reign of Shokuto had developed as a strong despot-
istic religion under the control of laymen. Moreover Buddhism has co-
mpeted with Christianity untill now even imitating the methods of the
Christianity.

3) Miscellaneous Religions

Japan has various religions so called that which is a Museun. With
ancient Animism and Shamanism there are a number of religions, so to
speak, Shinto, Christianity, Buddhim and so on. According to Minist-
ry of Culture of Japan 1969, there were 68,311,818 members of Shinto,
75,585,534 Buddhist, 700,728 Christians and 5,079,809 others. Accord-
ing to these statistical figures, Christians were not more than arou-
nd 0.5 of the total population of Japan. Because the other religio-
ns has been prevalent it has been difficult for the Church to glow.
